The Route to The End

Variations On A Theme

Today, September 23rd 2016, the Neurosis album Fires Within Fires gets released, if I were to say I am excited, it would be a huge understatement. I wanted to share some of the art that was created during the whole process. Neurosis is a band that has influenced my art since I first discovered them, to have come full circle and create images to accompany their music is very surreal, and has been a huge honor.

Here is the final cover, all hand painted, no photoshop or digital retouching, it is part of a larger piece that is 15 x 30″ – ink, gouache, acrylic and charcoal on paper. Before I show the finished pieces that make up the cover and album packaging I wanted to show a sample of the pieces that were created during the journey to the final art.

The Traveler by Thomas Hooper

Raking Light Projects is proud to announce the publication of TheTraveler by Thomas Hooper. The Traveler is a varied edition of 70 hand-embellished letterpress prints printed by Master Printer Paul Mullowney. The Traveler will be available for viewing and purchase at the Raking Light Projects hand-embellished print exhibit at the London Tattoo Convention on September 23 – 24 – 25.

The Traveler began with an intricate hand-drawn illustration by Thomas Hooper. To complement the intricate key imagery, Thomas utilized ink, watered-down gouache and bleach to transform Arches Watercolor paper into 70 uniquely embellished backgrounds measuring 20” (h) x 13” (w).

Faced with the challenge of printing a detailed image onto hand-finished paper with different colors and textures, Paul Mullowney printed the key image in white and finished the edition by hand-dusting traditional Japanese GoFun pigment onto the fresh white ink to add opacity and shimmer in the manner of a technique employed on Ukiyo- e prints of the 19th century.

The first 20 The Traveler multiples will be available exclusively at the London Tattoo Convention as part of the Raking Light Projects hand-embellished print exhibit taking place in the Upper Gallery space.

The remaining edition will be featured in exhibitions presented by Raking Light Projects in Chicago and San Francisco with a portion of the edition reserved for release online.
